HEART STRING CONCERT

An instrumental concert featuring various official instrumental, choral, and acapella organizations in Singapore, with quality performers!
This concert is also, by the way, part of the Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund project, a project helping to raise funds for needy students who can't afford to buy nice Bio textbooks or cheesy Hot sandwiches!
WHERE: Singapore Polytechnic (directly next to Dover MRT station)
WHEN: 25 June 2009, Friday, 7.30pm
TICKET PRICE: $8.00

All choir members are STRONGLY encouraged to go for this concert! You can also bring your other friends to go along, for a friend outing, or your girlfriend boyfriend gayfriend, for a romantic date! Just like what we did in the Methodist Girls choir concert at Esplanade, we can also use this concert as a learning experience! Especially the acapella, since we're embarking on "Ain't No Mountain High" which is an acapella song! Let's observe how professional acapella choirs pull such musical stunts off and sound like Celine Dion!

If you want to buy the tickets, please approach your gorgeous (*gagging sounds at a distance*) senior, Miss Low Yan Ting Amanda, who will tell you how to get the tickets! Because this is an outside concert, there won't be any official booth set up in school to sell them!

Even though we didn't get our Silver, I have to say, that that performance, right there, on the stage of Victoria Concert Hall, right at that moment... was our BEST performance we've ever given. Seriously. It's the first time I hear everyone singing the dynamics, going loud and going soft, so clearly. It's the first time I nearly cried as we sang Danny Boy, just by hearing us sing Danny Boy. It's the first time I saw everyone smile so widely as they sing the firefly song. And if you ask around all the choir members, I can bet they share the same feelings too.

Of course, Bronze award simply means we have not reached the standard required by a Silver award. Which means, we gotta keep improving ourselves until the next SYF which is like...oh, for me this is my last, but for my juniors, it ain't. So, keep improving yourselves, don't throw away everything that Miss Fu, Miss Mok, our seniors, and Mrs Kwok have taught you, don't backslide in your standard of performing, okay? The fact that you are a choir member of HYSS means you still have to maintain this very same standard you had for SYF. Cannot afford to drop.

Self-practice on Monday

For those who have their NAPFA test on this day, we will be asking the teacher in charge to reschedule for you all to take the NAPFA test on another date.

Remember to turn up in your court shoes; or else, if 1 person forgets to bring, the whole choir will run one round OUTSIDE the school. All for one, one for all, ok?

I would like to share with you this short story I learned from a leadership camp; it's called the parable of the frog. (I have a reason behind this).

Once upone a time, there was a race by frogs. The goal was to reach the top of a high tower. Many people gathered to see and support them. The race began.

In reality, the people probably did not believe that it was possible that the frogs could reach the top of the tower, and all the phrases that one could hear were of this kind, "What pain! They'll never make it!"

The frogs began to resign, except for one who kept on climbing. The people continued, "What pain! They'll never make it!" And the frogs admitted defeat, except for the frog that continued to insist.

At the end, all the frogs quit, except the one that, alone and with an enormous effort, reached the top of the tower. The others wanted to know how he did it. One of them approached him to ask him how he had done it - to finish the race. And discovered that he... was deaf!

This is the moral behind the story:

Never listen to people who have the bad habit of being negative...because they steal the best aspirations of your heart!

Always remind yourself of the power of the words that we hear or read. This is why you always have to think POSITIVE!

Always be deaf to someone who tells you that you cannot and will not achieve your goals or make your dreams come true.

Continue to strive on step-by-step towards your goals.

4.1 The judging criteria are as follows:

4.2 The decision of the panel of adjudicators is final and no appeal will be entertained.

5. AWARDS

5.1 The Central Judging provides the opportunity for choirs to benchmark their performance standards. There is no pre-determined number of gold, silver or bronze awards. Participating choirs will be awarded certificates based on their performances as follows:

• Gold 80% and above
• Silver 70% to 79%
• Bronze 60% to 69%
• Certificate of Participation 59% and below

5.2 To recognise the outstanding achievement of choirs that have attained high performance standards, schools that obtain a final mark of 85% and above will receive the Gold award (with Honours).

I'm here to post up some of the rules of Choir, which although I'm sure the juniors should have known by now.
But I'm still going to write it down anyways.

Choir Rule #1 - NO HANDPHONES ALLOWED IN CHOIR
Once seen somebody using handphone, it's confiscated until end of Choir.

Rule #2 - NO SWEETS, BISCUITS. BASICALLY, NO FOODS ALLOWED DURING CHOIR TIME UNLESS IT'S BREAK, NO SWEET DRINKS.
Anybody caught eating sweets, biscuits will have their food confiscated. Sweet drinks will be thrown away immediately. Only MINERAL WATER AND HERBAL DRINK ALLOWED.

Rule #3 - BE AT THE AVA ROOM 15 MINUTES EARLIER
Those who are late, please have a valid reason. If your valid reason is not acceptable, you'll be fined $1 the FIRST time. 2nd time will be $2, 3rd time will be $3 and so on, and unless you have a FEVER, you are required to still come to Choir but you will just need to sit down at one side and listen to the rest singing if you only have a SORE THROAT or FLU or COUGH.

Rule #4 - PLEASE BE AUTOMATIC
Automatic as in arranging the chairs when you are at the AVA room, then arrange back the chairs when Choir is over, and arrange it back to how it was arranged in. Not just pull the chair back and done you're done and go. Whenever Ms Fu or when we're doing Sectionals, please sit HALF CHAIR and sit UP STRAIGHT AUTOMATICALLY when it's time to sing. Not when the seniors tell you to do so then you do it, and when you sit STRAIGHT, you sit like that until the end of the song and not sing until halfway, and your back is hunched. If you are asked to do something, please do it IMMEDIATELY and not slowly. If you're asked to sit up straight, then put down your scores and stand up, less than 10 seconds.

Rule #5 - DO NOT TALK WHEN MS FU OR SOMEBODY IS TALKING
Absolutely no talking, that's the most basic respect for teachers, and please remember what Ms Fu told you what was wrong with your singing and treat it seriously. If she say and you know yourself that you should open your mouth big when singing, please do so.

Come to Choir with a love for it!! Not just for the sake of coming or SYF, if you were to ask us seniors why we join, all our answers are the same. We love singing and we want to improve it, and once you join, you are a part of it whether you like it or not.

That's all I want to say.

ANNOUNCEMENT!!! BRING WHAT YOU'RE PLANNING TO WEAR FOR THE T.A.L.E.N.Z. CONCERT NEXT CHOIR PRACTICE (Thursday, 12 Feb)

Just in case you forgot what to wear :
- Black pants/skirt (Formal) (no shorts, bermudas, mini skirts)
- Coloured blouse (any colour but plain black or plain white)

and, and, anddddddd :)

Keep the 21 February (next next Saturday) FREE. We're going to have a rehearsal for the concert on that day. The venue of the rehearsal would be in school i think. We'll inform you all more details during the following choir practices.

Okay, the reason I'm writing a post is because of Ms Fu told us to write 2 ideas on how we can bond with the Sec 1s during the Welcome Party on next Wed.

My 1st idea is...!!!!
PLAYING THE "TRUST" GAME THAT MS FU LAST TEACH US!!!!
Why?

Cos I learned that if u don't trust ur friends that are surrounding u,
And u don't try to let them "save" u,
U actually don't talk more to the person than u did to the others,
So it can actually also be a Bonding game,
As it lets u trust people,
And by trusting people,
Also means bonding with the people!!

My 2nd idea is...!!!!
RECOGNISING EACH OTHER'S VOICE
Why?

Cos it's like ur getting to know how ur friend's voice sound like,
Normally, we always think we know how each other sound like,
But if u pay much attention,
U actually don't really know how each other sound like.
So by listening to each other,
Is also a form of Bonding!!!

New Year, New Beginning...New ANNOUNCEMENTS :D

HI this should have been said days ago but since today is our FIRST choir practice of 2009, I shall say it here then.

HAPPY NEW CHOIR YEAR 2009!

Take note, it is new CHOIR year, not new year...so in other words, this post is justified as NOT laggy! Hahaha... xD

Yes, today is our first choir practice of 2009, so let us resolve to be better choir members and improve not just in our singing but in our commitment as well okay?

This year is going to be a very very very busy and exciting year for the choir. If you look at our list of events on your right, you'll see that we have :

A combined public performance with the Band, Dance Society and Guzheng Ensemble. Huge, eh? This is taking place on 27 February and the name of our concert is T.A.L.E.N.Z.
Next, we're also going to perform on Speech Day which is on the 14th of March. Another important event as there will definitely be a Guest-of-Honour appearing along with many parents who will have their eyes wide open, observing our school from top to bottom.
And, and, and, how can we forget? This is the biggest event we're working at : Singapore Youth Festival Central Judging of Choirs aka SYF 2009. And dear choir members, we aim for a SILVER (or at least bronze. whatever it is we die-die must not drop in our performance standard).

And a whole lot more waiting to be unravelled as the year goes by...

So, choir, let's all work hard towards our Silver for SYF okay? Let's give it all we got! xD

Monday - 3pm
Friday - 2pm

so do take note! Any special arrangements whatsover, we will update you and keep you informed.

Arts Camp

It was the first ever arts camp that was held, and it was actually organized by the students themselves from the various CCAs - choir, hip hop and eldds. Overall, we all had fun! XD

There were lessons for drama, singing and hip hop-dancing, but also not to mention water-bomb-games and treasure hunt! Maybe we did not bond extremely well with the people from the other CCAs, but hey...within us? I think we have learn new things about choir members in our choir that we seldom talk to. Or we have become closer to each other, more united as a choir in leading the singing lessons. So, we did bond within our choir, which is a good first step. Attacking each other with water bombs and singing together during the camp will be memories etched in our minds.

Let's hope that next year, we have another one that is more bonding, less tiring, and of course... MORE FUN! xD

Yesterday was the big day - our STARS@W4 Concert at UCC!
No photos here (maybe will get them soon), but we have one thing far better than photos - the memories.
Memories of our fun, memories of our effort! (:
At the start, things looked quite grey.
But yesterday night
Everything was a BLAST!
We're really glad that the songs we performed ("One Song" and "I will Follow You" with dance steps) all ended in a happy note
With a very encouraging and wonderful audience cheering wildly as if we were Hannah Montana look-alikes.

We really thank Mrs Leong (our principal), Mrs Cindy Lee (our vice-principal), Mdm Nisha, Mr Leow, the NPCC cadets who came, the many other huayians and huayi staff who came but we didn't get to meet that night; Thank you for coming, you truly gave us strength to perform when we were scared stiff on the stage. Also thank Miss Fu for guiding us through the songs and helping us perfecting them, helping us improve the dance steps, helping us with our make-up (F.O.C. hair-stylist! xD) and thank Mrs Kwok for being with us in every rehearsal, teaching us discipline on stage,helping us practice the songs, and the buns :P(lol hehe).

Hey all! Next week no choir practice due to EOYs! so study hard arh[@_@]!

Choir practice will resume on 14 October - that's during marking day - and the time is :

10.00am - 1.00pm

so don't late hor!

Okay, enough with the announcement...oh wait, there's one more:

we have a new member joining us (help out for the series of events we need to take part in) and her name is Eunice from sec 3 *clap* *clap* THANK YOU FOR JOINING US!!! you'll love it here XD

I've updated the events list so as you can see there will be more events coming up soon so yOu dON't have to wORRy, you will not die of boredom during your super long holidays :D.

As for choir tee...since it ain't urgent, we shall postpone the design until after the EOYs so no excuse to pon revision ok! we're such nerds~ -_-

Okay, I stink at giving speeches, so let's cut the rubbish and get to the point.
WELCOME TO HUA YI'S CHOIR BLOG!!!
The webpage that you are currently staring in your computer screen is that webpage of a choir of 11 members.

Yes, 11 members...we may be small, but our hearts are BIG (XD).

Anyway, to make this blog interesting to read and write, here are some points about what's going to happen in here:

Apart from announcements, entries about events we participated in (e.g. SYF) will also be posted here. WITH PHOTOS (if you have lah). Oh, and stuff about singers, or other choirs, or nice songs, blah blah anything to do with singing will also be posted here. :)
AND...this blog is not gonna be just a 1-person-2-person affair. Instead, ALL CHOIR MEMBERS will be able to write the blog as well (just no vulgarities and porn thank you) - I'll be giving you all the username and password next practice which is 8 September 2008 Friday 1.30pm by the way~ -.-
BUT...please remember the UNTOUCHABLES: the WHAT, the WHO, the MARKS LEFT BEHIND...and...the MARKS LEFT BEHIND. Basically, 3 things you cannot edit lah. You can however touch the links (if you change your blog link or you just created a blog for the first time) and of course, the posts.
